CONFIRMATION

Confirmation

Confirmation at Saint Matthew Parish

Confirmation is a sacramental outpouring of the Holy Spirit that leaves a permanent imprint on the soul, completes Christian initiation, and empowers us to be witnesses to Christ. (CCC 1302–1305)

Confirmation completes the Sacrament of Baptism by initiating each candidate fully into the Church, and empowering each with the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. The Confirmation Preparation program prepares students to fully understand their calling as Baptized Christians, and the truths of the Gospel so to better live it out in their own lives.

Institution by Jesus Christ

"Now when the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent them Peter and John, who went down and prayed for them, that they might receive the holy Spirit, for it had not yet fallen upon any of them; they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then they laid hands on them and they received the holy Spirit." (Acts 8:14-18)

The Grace and Effect of Confirmation
  • Washes away original sin, as well as all actual sin if any exists
  • Increases the grace given at Baptism
  • Gives an indelible spiritual mark, which is characterized by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit
  • Strengthens the Christian to profess the faith in an open manner and to fight against all temptations and difficulties
