The Sacramental Signs of Baptism

  1. Water
  2. Words: "I baptize you in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit."

Institution by Jesus Christ

Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit... Matthew 28:19

Amen, amen, I say to you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above." Nicodemus said to him, "How can a person once grown old be born again? Surely he cannot reenter his mother's womb and be born again, can he?" Jesus answered, "Amen, amen, I say to you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit. What is born of flesh is flesh and what is born of spirit is spirit. Do not be amazed that I told you, 'You must be born from above.'" John 3:3-7

The Grace (Effect)

The effects of Baptism are:

  • Washes away original sin, as well as all actual sin if any exists
  • Remits all punishment due on account of such sins
  • Imprints the character of a Christian
  • Makes us children of God, members of the Church, and heirs to Paradise; enables us to receive the other sacraments.
